What is Minecraft?
Minecraft is a popular Sandbox game with over 100 million players worldwide. Minecraft has been described as a game with no rules. It doesn’t come with a set of instructions, or a stated objective – players can build and explore however they want. It’s often compared to virtual Lego. Minecraft is great for developing problem solving, creativity, self-expression, planning and organisation skills.
How can we hack it?
Minecraft is written in a programming language called Java. With a bit of tinkering we can get the game to read Java code that we've written and include it in the game, allowing us to customise the game to do whatever we want it to, that could mean we change the texture of the blocks in the game or it could mean we give our player superpowers like super-speed or build complex building at the click of a button. We can even use software to do the coding for us, allowing anyone to make changes to the game without the steep learning curve.
